Child killers to die behind bars under Boris Johnson’s new justice overhaul

UK NEWS – News / Scotland / UK

Boris Johnson is set to introduce tougher sentences for the worst criminal offenders which could mean killers of young children are never released from prison.

The Sunday Telegraph said the Prime Minister would use the Queen’s Speech next month to relaunch his domestic policy agenda and bring forward a tougher approach to criminal justice.

Murderers of pre-school children would be subject to whole-life orders, while the minimum tariffs for other types of killings could be increased, the paper reported.

The Government is also said to want violent and sexual offenders to serve at least two thirds of their full terms, and is reportedly planning to move away from the automatic early-release system towards an “earned release”.

The comments come following Scots child killer Aaron Campbell having his sentence reduced.

Lady Dorrian, Lord Menzies and Lord Drummond reduced Campbell’s life term by three years to a minimum of 24 years for the rape and murder of six-year-old Alesha MacPhail, on the Isle of Bute in July last year.
