An 18-year-old man who tracked and raped a woman in Sheffield has today been jailed for eight years.
Matthew Jowitt, formerly of Cartmell Road was sentenced yesterday (22 August) at Sheffield Crown Court following an earlier guilty plea.
The court heard how on 14 May this year, Jowitt followed his 27-year-old victim before grabbing and pulling her in to a small ravine where he raped her.
Due to the courage and resilience shown by the victim, detectives were able to quickly detain Jowitt and bring him before the courts.
Jowitt, was today classified as a ‘dangerous offender’ by the judge, and has had additional controls imposed around his sentence. These controls mean that Jowitt must serve at least six years of his sentence, and cannot be released in under eight without approval of the Parole Board. He will then be on licence for a period of four years from the date of his release. Jowitt will also be placed on the sex offender’s register for life.
Speaking from court, Detective Sergeant Andy Shields said: “I am pleased with the sentence handed to Jowitt today and I believe that it reflects the unthinkable and horrendous ordeal he put his victim through.
“I would like to personally thank the victim and commend her for her tremendous bravery and resilience throughout this investigation.
